Though she was born in California, Anita’s parents were natives of Arkansas. Hence, the family almost annually traveled by car from California to Prescott, Arkansas, to visit her grandparents.

During that time, Sarah allowed Anita to stay with her grandparents to attend the fifth grade at McRae Elementary, the seventh at McRae Jr. High, and the tenth at McRae High School.

Anita was the fourth of six children in her family, including brothers Fritz and Aaron and sisters Ruth, Bonnie, and June Pointer.

In 1969, she left her job as a secretary to form The Pointer Sisters with her younger sisters, Bonnie and June. She was 21 at the time.

Her older brother, Aaron, is a retired baseball player and later NFL referee. He played in MLB for the Houston Colt .45’s/Astros in 1963 and 1966–67.

Likewise, Aaron’s son and Anita’s nephew Deron was an All-PAC returner/wide receiver. He spent 1994 as a practice team member of the Indianapolis Colts.

Besides, Anita’s cousin, Paul Silas, was a basketball player and head coach. He played in the NBA, winning three championships: two with Boston Celtics and one with Seattle SuperSonics.
