The Yankees' recent losing streak is reaching historic lows

August 2024 · 2 minute read

The Yankees are still in the middle of their worst season in decades, but they at least avoided some ignominy Wednesday night against the Nationals, when they took their first lead in 61 innings with a run in the bottom of the first to go up, 1-0.

And of course, it was Aaron Judge who did it, with a one-out homer.

It was their first lead in a game since being ahead 2-1 in the top of the second in Atlanta on Aug. 14.

This, while the Yankees are also in their longest losing streak — nine games — since 1982 and looking to avoid what would be their longest losing streak since 1913.

According to Elias, the 61-inning stretch was the third-longest such streak in franchise history, just two innings shy of the 63-inning record stretch set in 1906.

Oddly, the World Series champion 2000 Yankees own the second-longest streak, with a 62-inning stretch without a lead from Sept. 25 through Oct. 1, before they got going again in the playoffs.

That 2000 team also set the franchise record of six straight games without a lead- which they did twice- and the 2023 Yankees team matched that before Wednesday’s first-inning run.

A loss Wednesday would be the first Yankee losing streak of 10 games or longer since 1913, when they dropped 13 in a row.
